In a heartbreaking loss for the South Indian film industry, renowned actor Sarath Babu passed away on Monday morning in Hyderabad at the age of 71. The veteran Tamil and Telugu star had been battling illness for the past few weeks and was undergoing treatment at the AIG Hospital in Gachibowli, Hyderabad.

Earlier this month, Sarath Babu had become the victim of an internet death hoax, leading to widespread concern among his fans and well-wishers. However, his sister clarified that the actor was recovering slowly and had been shifted to the general room from the ICU. The family had urged the public to disregard unofficial news circulating on social media.

Unfortunately, Sarath Babu’s health continued to deteriorate, and he was being treated for multi-organ failure. Reports suggest that he developed sepsis, a severe response of the immune system to an infection, which further affected the functioning of his kidneys, lungs, liver, and other organs. This was his second hospitalization in recent weeks, having previously been admitted to a hospital in Chennai.

Director Hemant Madhukar, the son of acclaimed filmmaker K Babu Rao, expressed his sorrow over the demise of Sarath Babu. Taking to Twitter, he wrote, “It’s sad to hear the news about the demise of one of the greatest actors Sarath Babu Garu. It’s an honour that he was first launched as a hero in our film #Ramarajyam 1973 in our banner #ramavijethafilms directed by my father late Shri K Baburao.”

Born Satyam Babu Dixithulu, Sarath Babu made his acting debut in the Telugu film “Rama Rajyam” in 1973. He later ventured into Tamil cinema with K. Balachander’s “Pattina Pravesam” in 1977, establishing himself as a versatile actor in both industries.

Among his notable works, Sarath Babu’s last Telugu film was “Vakeel Saab” in 2021, where he shared the screen with leading actor Pawan Kalyan. The film, directed by Venu Sriram, received widespread acclaim. In Tamil cinema, his last appearance was in Ramanan Purushothama’s “Vasantha Mullai” in 2023.

The demise of Sarath Babu leaves a significant void in the South Indian film industry, as he was celebrated for his immense talent and remarkable contributions to cinema. His legacy as a versatile actor will forever be remembered, and he will be greatly missed by fans, colleagues, and the entire film fraternity.
