Animal,” helmed by director Sandeep Reddy Vanga, emerges as an intriguing yet contentious cinematic venture driven by the intense portrayal of Ranbir Kapoor, albeit marred by troubling narratives and uneven storytelling.

Plot Overview:

The film presents Ranvijay Singh (Ranbir Kapoor) chasing after his father Balbir Singh (Anil Kapoor) throughout his boyhood, establishing a strong emotional foundation. However, the narrative takes a dark turn, diving into themes of vengeance and raw brutality.

Strengths:

Ranbir Kapoor’s performance is undeniably intense and chilling, showcasing a character brimming with sinister and maniacal traits. The portrayal of a brutal encounter between his character and over 200 men exhibits the raw and violent essence of his persona, making his presence seemingly formidable.

The captivating background score and music, especially during gripping action sequences, elevate the film’s tension and adrenaline, immersing the audience deeper into the chaotic narrative.

The film benefits from a talented ensemble cast, with each member contributing their prowess. Ranbir Kapoor’s dynamic chemistry with co-stars enriches the storytelling, promising an engaging cinematic experience.

Drawbacks:

However, the film ventures into troubling territories, exhibiting problematic characterizations. The portrayal of Ranbir Kapoor’s character as an ‘alpha male’ due to extreme mistreatment raises concerns, particularly in justifying his actions, leading to discomforting instances of misogyny and sexism.

The second half of the film falls short compared to its gripping first half, suffering from disjointed storytelling and forced scenes that disrupt the narrative flow. The attempt to explore sexual themes feels forced and out of place.

Bobby Deol’s Underutilization:

Bobby Deol’s limited screen time disappoints, overshadowing his potential impact. Despite his brief appearances, he manages to surprise in the minimal moments he is present.

Final Thoughts:

“Animal” offers a distinctive cinematic experience led by Ranbir Kapoor’s compelling performance. However, the film grapples with questionable narratives, especially concerning misogyny, and a disjointed second half that detracts from its initial intensity. While the conclusion attempts to salvage the flaws, the movie predominantly leans on Ranbir Kapoor’s magnetic screen presence to hold it together.
