Kalki 2898 AD: A wave of criticism erupted online after the makers of Kalki 2898 AD officially announced that Bollywood star Deepika Padukone will not return for the sequel. Deepika, who played the pivotal role of Sumati in the original 2023 blockbuster, was a fan-favourite—and her sudden ouster has left many questioning both the tone and intent behind the studio’s statement.
The production house, Vyjayanthi Movies, issued a formal note on Thursday stating that Deepika would no longer be involved in the upcoming instalment. The statement read:
“After careful consideration, we have decided to part ways. Despite the long journey of making the first film, we were unable to find a partnership. And a film like Kalki 2898 AD deserves that commitment and much more.”
While the message wished Deepika the best in her future projects, the mention of “lack of partnership” and “commitment” hasn’t gone down well with her fans—many of whom found the wording unnecessarily accusatory.
One fan retorted sharply, “Lack of commitment? As if Prabhas is sitting idle and solely focusing on Kalki. What utter nonsense!” It’s worth noting that Prabhas, the lead star, is juggling multiple big-ticket projects including Spirit and The Raja Saab.
Another fan expressed their emotional connection to Deepika’s character: “Her portrayal of Sumati moved me. The fire tunnel scene brought tears to my eyes. I can’t even imagine anyone else in that role.”
Some went further, calling out the unprofessional nature of the statement itself. “So you’ll recast Sumati through reincarnation in the next part? This is incredibly disappointing. Frankly, I’m glad Deepika has walked away. She deserves far better,” wrote one user.
“Deepika was the soul of Kalki,” another fan chimed in. “To not bring her back is just plain foolish. The film needs her more than she needs the film.”
While neither Deepika nor her team has publicly responded to the announcement, the backlash has highlighted how deeply audiences connected with her role—and how a single casting decision, coupled with an ill-worded statement, can trigger widespread outrage.
