In a recent announcement, IMDb, the popular online database for films and television, has unveiled its list of the top 10 most popular Indian films and shows for the year 2023 so far. Notably, Shah Rukh Khan’s highly anticipated action-thriller “Pathaan” has claimed the top spot in the list of popular Indian movies, while Shahid Kapoor’s crime comedy series “Farzi” has emerged as the most popular Indian show.

IMDb determines the popularity rankings solely based on page views and does not take into account box office performance or critical reception. With a stellar cast including Shah Rukh Khan, Deepika Padukone, John Abraham, and Dimple Kapadia, “Pathaan,” directed by Siddharth Anand, took the film industry by storm upon its release on January 25, 2023. Shah Rukh Khan expressed his gratitude for the movie’s top ranking, stating that he was delighted to know that “Pathaan” had resonated with audiences worldwide. The film marked the actor’s comeback after a five-year break and became a massive box-office success.

Among the notable entries on the list are two Tamil films. “Varisu,” starring Thalapathy Vijay and Rashmika Mandanna, secured the ninth position. The film, released on January 11, 2023, garnered significant attention from the audience. At the tenth spot is Mani Ratnam’s ambitious project “Ponniyin Selvan: Part Two,” featuring Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Shobhita Dhulipala, Trisha Krishnan, Vikram, and Aishwarya Lekshmi in prominent roles.

Turning to the realm of web series, “Farzi” has emerged as the most popular Indian show of 2023 so far. This black crime comedy series, created by Raj and DK of “The Family Man” fame, stars Shahid Kapoor, Vijay Sethupathi, Kay Kay Menon, and Raashi Khanna in pivotal roles. “Farzi” revolves around a disillusioned artist named Sunny, who embarks on a mission to create counterfeit money to challenge the system. The series marks Shahid Kapoor’s debut in the OTT (over-the-top) platform and premiered on Amazon Prime Video on February 10, 2023.

IMDb’s popularity rankings provide a glimpse into the audience’s interests and preferences in the Indian film and web series landscape. As the year progresses, it will be intriguing to see how the rankings evolve and which other cinematic offerings capture the viewers’ attention.
