Veteran actor Anupam Kher reaffirmed his belief in speaking the truth and defended his film “The Kashmir Files” during a session at the 2023 Jagran Film Festival (JFF) in New Delhi. The 2022 film, which depicted the exodus of the Kashmiri Pandit community from the Kashmir Valley in the 1990s, received both accolades for its commercial success and criticism for being labelled a “propaganda” film.

In response to questions about the criticism faced by the movie, Kher asserted, “The Kashmir Files is our internal truth…I talk candidly and I do that because there should not be any problem in telling the truth. There is an end to truth. There is no interpretation of truth.”

The 68-year-old actor expressed his concern about filmmakers trying to please everyone, a practice he discourages. He emphasized the importance of staying true to one’s vision and not seeking validation solely from others. “Don’t try to be popular with the whole world. First, be popular with yourself. If you’re not popular with yourself, there is something wrong with you. We often try to make something (film) wondering ‘Will the others like it?’ No, what is important is if I like it or not,” he stated.

“The Kashmir Files,” directed by Vivek Agnihotri, garnered significant success at the box office, reportedly earning over Rs 200 crore. However, it also faced criticism and was labelled a “propaganda” film. The movie features Anupam Kher, along with talented actors Pallavi Joshi, Darshan Kumar, and Mithun Chakraborty in key roles.

Despite his illustrious career spanning nearly four decades, Anupam Kher humbly expressed that he doesn’t appreciate being referred to as a “veteran or legend.” The National School of Drama graduate made his impressive debut with the 1984 film “Saaransh” and has left a remarkable impact with movies like “Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge,” “Karma,” and “A Wednesday.” He humorously remarked, “I’m not competing with my contemporaries. I’m competing with the Tiger Shroffs of the world. I’m competing with Varun Dhawan.”

With his characteristic wit, Kher urged against retirement despite the honorary titles, stating, “So, don’t call me a legend, veteran, or thespian because these (tags) mean you have worked a lot, please take retirement. There are still 30-40 years to go for my retirement.”

The Jagran Film Festival, which opened with the Adil Hussain-starrer “Footprints on Water,” directed by Nathalia Syam, is an annual celebration of cinema that showcases diverse talent and compelling stories.

As Anupam Kher continues to fearlessly embrace the truth and push creative boundaries, his unwavering dedication to his craft remains an inspiration to audiences and aspiring filmmakers alike.
