2023 witnessed an extraordinary period for the South Indian film industry, characterized by many films that broke barriers, challenged norms, and captivated audiences with their diverse storytelling.

Pinkvilla’s poll for the Best South Indian Film of the Year showcased a lineup of 13 exceptional films, each contributing to the cinematic tapestry in its unique way. Notable nominations included Mani Ratnam’s grand epic “Ponniyin Selvan II,” featuring a stellar cast including Chiyaan Vikram, Jayam Ravi, Trisha Krishnan, Karthi, and Sobhita Dhulipala.

The nominations list also embraced Nani’s historical action drama “Dasara,” Jude Anthany Joseph’s gripping survival story “2018,” and Nelson Dileepkumar’s collaboration with Rajinikanth in “Jailer.”

Representing the Kannada film fraternity were Rakshit Shetty’s enchanting romantic drama “Sapta Saagaradaache Ello, both Side A and Side B,” Adhik Ravichandran’s sci-fi comedy “Mark Antony,” and Lokesh Kanagaraj’s much-anticipated “Leo,” starring Thalapathy Vijay. The anticipation and intrigue around “Leo” intensified due to its speculated connection to the Lokesh Cinematic Universe, ultimately confirmed upon its release as the third instalment after “Kaithi” and “Vikram.”

Despite varied critical reception, “Leo,” backed by Seven Screen Studio, marked a significant collaboration between Lokesh Kanagaraj and Thalapathy Vijay, enlivened by Anirudh Ravichander’s music and Manoj Paramahamsa’s cinematography.

Lokesh Kanagaraj’s trajectory includes directing Rajinikanth in “Thalaivar171,” anticipated to showcase the Petta actor in an antagonistic role. This project, distinct from the Lokesh Cinematic Universe, is backed by Sun Pictures and promises Anirudh Ravichander’s musical brilliance. Furthermore, Kanagaraj’s exploration into a prequel short film preceding “Kaithi” aims to unveil the origins of the Lokesh Cinematic Universe, offering a compelling narrative to cinema lovers.

Lokesh Kanagaraj continues to carve his path as a significant storyteller and innovator in the cinematic realm, contributing to the evolving landscape of South Indian cinema in 2023.
