“Actor Nani on Indian Cinema’s Golden Phase, Global Recognition, and Breaking Language Barriers”

Nani, known for his work in Telugu cinema, shares his thoughts on the current state of Indian cinema and the global recognition it has received, particularly with the Oscar-winning track Naatu Naatu from the film RRR (2022) and the documentary The Elephant Whisperers. He believes that this is a golden period for Indian cinema, with music and dance being its strengths, and the world finally recognizing it.

Nani also addresses the Hindi versus southern language films debate, stating that it has been blown out of proportion. He believes that good scripts and emotions are universally relatable, and whoever makes good cinema will get brownie points, regardless of the language.

Regarding breaking language barriers, Nani feels that it’s the fault of the industry for seeing language as a barrier and not going all out. He gives credit to director SS Rajamouli for showing the route of success to the regional industry with the film Bahubali. He believes that the audience has made filmmakers realize that great and unique scripts work anywhere, and the lines between languages and cinema are getting blurred.

Nani is open to exploring Bollywood and has received offers before, but he will only do it if he likes the script and if there is a reason for it, regardless of the language. He concludes by saying that the two Academy Awards have given a new respect to Indian cinema and it’s time for the world to dance to Indian songs.
