Mumbai: Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s timeless romantic film Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam marks its 26th anniversary today. On this special occasion, the filmmaker reflected on the experience of shooting the film and confirmed the much-speculated off-screen chemistry between lead actors Salman Khan and Aishwarya Rai.
In a recent interview with ETimes, Bhansali fondly recalled the film’s making and the environment on set, saying, “Yes, there was love in the air. But not just between them; there was a lot of affection among all of us. Zohra Sehgal, Helen Aunty, Salman, Aishwarya, Vikram Gokhale, Smita Jayekar – we were like one big family. I don’t think I’ve ever had such a fulfilling experience shooting any other film.”
When asked if he would ever remake the beloved classic, Bhansali firmly said he wouldn’t remake any of his films, except for Khamoshi, expressing a desire to change its ending.
Bhansali also shared his admiration for Aishwarya Rai, stating that she was the perfect choice for the role of Nandini and matched his exact vision for the character.
Released in 1999, Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam is a romantic drama that explores a love triangle between Sameer (played by Salman Khan), Nandini (Aishwarya Rai), and Vanraj (Aamir Khan, later replaced by Ajay Devgn). The film’s emotional depth and unexpected yet satisfying ending have made it a fan favourite over the years.
The movie also featured stellar performances by Vikram Gokhale, Smita Jayekar, and others, and continues to be celebrated as one of Bollywood’s most iconic love stories.
