During the shooting of their first film together, “Amarkalam,” Shalini was often accompanied by her parents, and Ajith had a hard time finding moments to connect with her. Back then, phones weren’t as ubiquitous as they are today, so Ajith had to come up with a creative solution to stay in touch with his lady love. He gave her a secret code name, “Sona AK46,” which he used whenever he wanted to communicate with her.

As it turned out, Shalini’s co-star from the film “Niram,” Kunchako Boban, was the owner of a Sony Ericsson phone, and Ajith would call him to talk to Shalini. Whenever he called, he would say “Sona, AK-47 calling.” Sona was the name of Shalini’s character in the film Niram.
The director of the movie, Kamal, became suspicious of the AK-47 code word and asked Kunchacko Boban about it. Boban revealed the secret to Kamal, who then teased Shalini about it on set, making her blush.
Ajith and Shalini’s love story has been going strong for 23 years now. They got married in 2000 and have two children together, a daughter named Anoushka and a son named Aadvik. During the shooting of “Amarkalam,” Ajith accidentally injured Shalini’s hand, and he took care of her for the rest of the shoot. The incident melted Shalini’s heart, and the two have been inseparable ever since.
