Kamal Haasan’s ‘Thug Life’ Banned in Karnataka Over Kannada Language Controversy

Kamal Haasan recently sparked controversy during a promotional event for Thug Life, when a comment intended to express his admiration for the Tamil language backfired. The actor stated that Kannada originated from Tamil—a remark that drew criticism and unrest from those who strongly disagreed.

Despite Clarification, Kamal Haasan Faces Backlash Over Kannada Remark:

Although veteran Tamil actor Kamal Haasan has clarified his recent remarks made during the Thug Life promotional event—insisting his comments were misunderstood and blown out of proportion—the controversy shows no signs of subsiding. His statement suggesting that Kannada originated from Tamil has sparked outrage among Kannada language groups and cultural organizations, leading to significant pushback.

In response to the uproar, the Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce (KFCC) has imposed a temporary ban on the release of Thug Life in the state, demanding a formal apology from Haasan.

Karnataka’s Minister for Kannada and Culture addressed the issue in a letter to the Film Chamber, stating that Haasan’s remarks had deeply hurt the sentiments of the Kannada-speaking community. He urged the authorities to suspend the film’s release until a proper and public apology is made.

Will Thug Life Release in Karnataka?

As of now, the KFCC has halted the release of the Mani Ratnam-directed film, giving Kamal Haasan until May 31 to issue a public apology.

In a press conference, the KFCC chief stated, “We have no sympathy for Kamal Haasan. If he does not issue a public apology today or tomorrow, we will support Kannada activists and protest fiercely. Under no circumstances will we allow the film’s release unless he apologises publicly.”
